What the tester shows is what the browser received — not a lab-grade measurement of your microphone. Browsers resample, apply echo cancellation and auto-gain, and present audio as 32-bit float regardless of your hardware’s actual converter depth; the info grid reports those negotiated values faithfully, but they describe the pipeline, not the raw capsule. A healthy meter here means your capture path works end to end — it doesn’t certify frequency response or absolute sensitivity.

A failure here is a strong hint, not a verdict. Flat silence can come from the page permission, the OS privacy layer, a muted device, a busy driver, or genuinely dead hardware — the guides help you separate them, but confirm a hardware fault on a second machine before replacing anything. Likewise, settings paths in the fix checklist shift with OS and browser releases; your menus may differ.
